Our hospital continues to strengthen its position not only in the field of advanced medical care but also in scientific research. A significant milestone for the hospital is the attainment of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Medical Sciences by Saidamir Muradovich Jafarov.
This achievement represents years of clinical practice, scientific research, complex medical decision-making, and a continuous commitment to making patient care more effective and safer.
Saidamir Jafarov’s research addresses one of the important challenges in modern cardiovascular medicine: determining the optimal treatment strategy for patients with concurrent atherosclerotic disease of the coronary and carotid arteries, which supply blood to the heart and contribute to blood flow to the brain, respectively.
The study analysed treatment outcomes in 338 patients and led to the development of an algorithm designed to comprehensively assess vascular conditions, evaluate potential risks, and determine the most appropriate sequence of medical interventions.
The practical relevance of the research is particularly significant. Its findings may help physicians make more informed decisions in complex clinical situations, with the aim of reducing the risk of serious cardiovascular complications.
An important role in this scientific work was played by Saidamir Jafarov’s academic supervisors: Guzal Uchkunovna Mullabaeva, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and Ravshan Jalilovich Sunnatov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, and Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at AKFA Medline University Hospital.
Their scientific expertise, professional knowledge, and guidance were instrumental throughout the years of research, bringing together clinical practice and modern scientific approaches.
But what does it take to earn a PhD while working as a practising physician? What challenges arise along the way? Most importantly, how can scientific research improve patient care?
We spoke with Saidamir Jafarov about his academic journey, the results of his research, and his professional aspirations.
Interview with Saidamir Jafarov
1. What inspired you to pursue a PhD?
First and foremost, our daily work and our patients. Over the years of clinical practice, we have encountered many complex cases that required us to find unconventional solutions.
Eventually, I realised that I wanted not only to gain clinical experience but also to explore these challenges from a scientific perspective, with the goal of making treatment more effective and safer.
2. What was the focus of your dissertation, and why did you choose this topic?
Our research focused on the treatment of patients who have vascular disease affecting both the heart and the brain.
In such cases, physicians face a difficult question: which condition should be treated first — the coronary arteries or the arteries supplying blood to the brain? Or could both interventions be performed simultaneously?
We frequently encounter these situations in clinical practice and understand how important it is to determine the appropriate sequence of treatment.
3. What is the scientific novelty of your research?
Our primary objective was to develop an algorithm that helps physicians select the most appropriate treatment strategy.
In simple terms, we proposed a system that allows specialists to comprehensively assess the condition of the coronary and cerebral blood supply, identify where the greatest risk lies, and determine the optimal sequence of interventions.
4. What challenges did you face while preparing and defending your dissertation?
The greatest challenge was balancing scientific research with daily work in the operating room. Research requires considerable time, attention, and patience, while clinical responsibilities continue regardless of academic commitments.
Of course, there were sleepless nights, exhaustion, and numerous revisions.
However, thanks to the support of my family, colleagues, and especially my academic supervisors, we were able to complete this journey.
I am sincerely grateful to them for their knowledge, experience, patience, and constant encouragement.
5. What was the most significant achievement during your research?
Perhaps the most important achievement was that our research did not remain merely theoretical.
We analysed treatment outcomes in 338 patients and, based on the findings, developed an approach that may assist physicians in making decisions in complex clinical situations.
For me, this is the true value of scientific research — when its results can be applied in everyday medical practice.
6. How can the findings of your research benefit patients?
The primary goal of our research is to make treatment safer.
When a patient has vascular disease affecting both the heart and the brain, it is essential to determine which intervention should be performed first.
Our proposed approach helps physicians assess risks more objectively, select the optimal treatment sequence, and thereby seek to reduce the likelihood of serious complications such as myocardial infarction and stroke.
7. What does earning a PhD mean to you, and what professional goals have you set for the future?
For me, this is an important milestone in my life and the result of many years of collective effort. Behind this dissertation are not only years of research but also tremendous support from my mentors, colleagues, and family.
However, obtaining a scientific degree is not the ultimate goal. Medicine is constantly evolving, and we must continue to grow alongside it.
Looking ahead, I plan to pursue further research, develop international collaborations, master and implement advanced treatment methods, and share knowledge with younger colleagues.
And, of course, the most important thing is to remain a physician and continue helping people
Scientific Achievements as a Foundation for AKFA Medline’s Development
Saidamir Jafarov’s journey is a clear example of how clinical practice and scientific research complement each other, creating new opportunities for the advancement of modern medicine.
At AKFA Medline , strengthening scientific capacity is an important area of professional development. The hospital brings together specialists who not only provide high-quality medical care but also conduct research, improve diagnostic and treatment methods, and share their expertise with the next generation of physicians.
Today,at our hospital employs more than 150 highly qualified medical specialists, including physicians holding PhD degrees, Doctors of Medical Sciences, and members of the academic community with professorial titles.
Doctors of Medical Sciences and professors play a particularly important role in the hospital’s scientific and clinical development.
They include Ravshan Jalilovich Sunnatov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, and Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at AKFA Medline University Hospital, as well as Kalandar Babadjanov, Doctor of Medical Sciences.
The presence of specialists with advanced academic qualifications creates opportunities for professional knowledge exchange, the development of research activities, and the introduction of modern approaches into clinical practice.
Every new scientific achievement by a member of the hospital’s medical team contributes to its overall development, strengthens its academic environment, and highlights the importance of continuous professional growth.
